Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift in Albania

Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift in Albania

Dental bone grafting adds or preserves bone in part of the jaw. A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a specific grafting procedure in the back of the upper jaw that creates space for bone beneath the maxillary sinus lining. These procedures may support future implant treatment, but they are not required for every implant patient.

When bone augmentation may be considered

  • The jaw is too narrow or has insufficient height for the planned implant.
  • Bone has reduced after tooth loss, infection, gum disease or trauma.
  • An extraction socket needs preservation for possible future restoration.
  • A defect around an implant site requires additional support.
  • The floor of the maxillary sinus is close to a proposed upper back-tooth implant site.

The need for grafting should be demonstrated through clinical examination and appropriate imaging. Patients should also be told whether a shorter implant, different implant position, bridge, denture or accepting the space could avoid graft surgery.

Bone grafting and sinus lift are different

Local jawbone grafting

A local graft may increase the width or height of the ridge, preserve an extraction socket or rebuild a limited defect. Depending on the available bone and treatment plan, an implant may be placed at the same appointment or after a separate healing period.

Sinus lift or sinus augmentation

A sinus lift is used in selected sites in the back of the upper jaw. The sinus membrane is elevated and graft material is placed beneath it. An internal approach may be considered when only a limited increase is needed. A lateral or external approach may be used when more augmentation is required.

Graft materials and consent

Graft material may come from the patient, a processed human donor source, an animal source, a synthetic material or a combination. A membrane or other stabilising material may also be used. The clinic should identify the proposed material, manufacturer or tissue source, why it is recommended and any relevant religious, ethical, allergy or medical considerations before consent.

Assessment before treatment

Planning may include examination of the teeth and gums, dental radiographs and cone-beam CT when clinically indicated. The clinician should assess active infection, gum disease, available bone, nearby nerves and blood vessels, the sinus anatomy and any history of sinus disease or surgery. Medical conditions, medicines, smoking or vaping and oral hygiene can affect healing.

Typical treatment stages

  1. Diagnosis and options: confirm the bone deficiency, implant plan, alternatives and whether grafting is necessary.
  2. Material and technique selection: document the graft source, membrane, surgical approach and whether the implant will be placed simultaneously or later.
  3. Surgery: the site is accessed under the agreed anaesthesia, graft material is placed and the area is closed.
  4. Early review: assess healing, remove non-dissolving sutures when required and check for infection, wound opening or sinus symptoms.
  5. Integration period: allow sufficient healing before implant placement or loading, based on the defect, material and clinical findings.
  6. Implant and restoration: reassess the site before continuing with implant or prosthetic treatment.

Risks and limitations

Possible complications include pain, swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, wound opening, graft exposure, loss or failure of graft material, altered sensation, damage to nearby structures and the need for further surgery. Sinus-lift risks can also include perforation of the sinus membrane, sinus infection, graft migration and an opening between the mouth and sinus.

Successful graft healing does not guarantee that a later implant will integrate or remain problem-free. The risks and prognosis of the implant and final restoration must be considered separately.

Planning treatment in Albania

  • Ask to see the imaging finding that supports the need for grafting.
  • Confirm the exact graft material, membrane and implant system in writing.
  • Ask whether grafting and implant placement are simultaneous or staged.
  • Request separate prices for grafting, membranes, imaging, sedation, implants and follow-up.
  • Confirm how many visits are expected and when flying is considered appropriate.
  • Ask who will manage infection, membrane perforation, graft failure or sinus symptoms after you return home.
  • Obtain copies of imaging, operative notes, material details and aftercare instructions.

Aftercare and warning signs

Follow the surgeon’s written instructions on cleaning, diet, medicines, physical activity and smoking. Sinus-lift instructions may include avoiding nose blowing and actions that raise sinus pressure. Contact the treating clinic or an appropriate local clinician promptly if bleeding does not settle, pain or swelling worsens, fever develops, pus or a bad taste appears, the wound opens, graft material is lost in quantity or sinus symptoms develop.

Questions to ask the clinic

  • Why is grafting necessary for this exact site?
  • What non-grafting alternatives are reasonable?
  • Which clinician will perform the procedure and manage complications?
  • What material and membrane will be used?
  • Could the implant be placed during the same procedure?
  • What findings must be present before treatment proceeds to the next stage?

Procedure duration

The operation may be completed in one appointment, but graft integration and later implant treatment can require staged care over several months.

Recommended stay

Confirm after surgical planning. Early review may be required, and implant placement or restoration can require one or more later visits.

Recovery

Swelling, bruising, tenderness and minor bleeding may occur after surgery. Graft integration takes longer than the initial soft-tissue recovery and must be clinically reassessed.

Prices and outcomes are indicative. A clinical assessment is required.
