Dental Crowns in Albania

Dental Crowns in Albania

A dental crown is a fixed restoration that covers a prepared natural tooth or forms the visible restoration on a dental implant. It may be considered when a tooth is weakened, heavily filled, fractured, worn, root-treated or needs significant restoration of its shape and function.

When a dental crown may be considered

  • A tooth has been weakened by decay or a large filling.
  • A tooth is fractured, severely worn or has lost substantial structure.
  • A root-treated tooth needs additional protection.
  • A crown is required as part of a bridge or implant restoration.
  • Shape or colour cannot be addressed appropriately with a more conservative restoration.

A crown requires removal of some tooth structure. A dentist should also discuss more conservative alternatives, such as a direct restoration, inlay, onlay or veneer, when they are clinically appropriate.

Crown materials and designs

Available options can include zirconia, E-max or other all-ceramic crowns, porcelain fused to metal, and metal crowns. Material choice depends on the tooth position, remaining tooth structure, bite forces, appearance, opposing teeth, allergies, laboratory workflow and the clinician’s assessment. No single material is best for every patient.

Assessment before treatment

The clinic should examine the tooth, gums, bite and surrounding teeth. Dental radiographs may be needed to check the roots, existing restorations and supporting bone. Decay, gum disease, infection or an unsuitable root filling may need treatment before crown preparation. The dentist should confirm whether the tooth can be predictably restored.

Typical treatment stages

  1. Diagnosis and planning: examination, imaging when indicated, discussion of alternatives, material selection and a written quotation.
  2. Tooth preparation: the tooth is shaped under an agreed form of anaesthesia and an impression or digital scan is taken.
  3. Temporary restoration: a temporary crown may protect the prepared tooth while the final crown is made.
  4. Try-in and fitting: fit, contact points, bite and appearance are checked before the crown is cemented or otherwise secured.
  5. Review and maintenance: the crown and supporting tooth need ongoing hygiene, dental reviews and repair or replacement when required.

Risks and limitations

Possible problems include temporary or persistent sensitivity, discomfort after preparation, irritation of the gum, decay at the crown margin, bite problems, loosening, chipping or fracture. Some prepared teeth later need root canal treatment. A crown does not make the underlying tooth immune to decay or gum disease, and no crown should be presented as permanent.

Planning crown treatment in Albania

  • Ask how many appointments and days are required for preparation, laboratory work and fitting.
  • Confirm whether the quotation is per tooth and which material is included.
  • Ask whether assessment, imaging, temporary crowns, core build-ups, root canal treatment and adjustments are included or charged separately.
  • Confirm who prepares the tooth, who manufactures the crown and who checks the final fit.
  • Request copies of relevant records and written aftercare instructions before travelling home.
  • Agree how urgent problems, remakes and longer-term maintenance will be handled after you return.

Aftercare

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between the teeth as advised. Attend regular examinations and hygiene appointments. Contact a dentist if the crown becomes loose, the bite feels persistently wrong, pain develops, the gum swells or the crown fractures.

Questions to ask a clinic

  • Why is a crown recommended instead of a more conservative restoration?
  • What is the condition and prognosis of the supporting tooth?
  • Which crown material is proposed, and why is it suitable for this tooth?
  • Will a temporary crown be provided?
  • Could root canal treatment or a core build-up be required?
  • What is included in the quotation and aftercare policy?
